This weekend we finally had a chance to watch it.

Before I give my thumbs up/down; I should explain that John Bunyan's 'Pilgrims 's Progress' was one of the first books I ever read after getting saved (heavy huh?). Needless to say, it made a big impression. So when I saw this DVD version of Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to Heaven...I had to get it :).
As a qualified English teacher, I realise the original language of the classic novel can be hard ploughing for today's youth (and others!), unless they are particularly motivated or really enjoy that form of text. I have never read the 'modern' versions of the book, with the exception of a childrens version, so I cant comment on those. But I definitely recognise the value of utilising visual interpretations of classic texts, as long as adequate discussion and comparison is made.
The DVD is well worth watching. If you have read the book, you will probably have a much better intial understanding of what is going on. I thought the mix of modern and classic was appropriate and done well, although initially Jack disagreed (he was expecting more of a fantastical Lord of the Rings style film). The language and setting is easy to understand, although the allegorical elements will require thinking from people who dont have a background in the novel. Overall, the general messages of the book (personal sin, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, the journey of a Christian walk, the joy of heaven) come across clearly.
Like many book-based films, the novel explores in much more detail the characters, ideas, language, emotions, motives, themes etc- this often leads to disappointment from the novel-loving viewer (in my opinion). And given the time limitations and the translation from written to visual text, the film may appear to be a watered-down interpretation of Bunyan's classic novel. You just have to deal with it. I would've liked to see a bit more of the intensity of the novel as far as the unexpected and daily struggles- using film techniques to their advantage rather than a 'make a movie by numbers' approach. But I'll just have to deal with it :). There are some solid digital special effects, but this is not a Hollywood blockbuster- dont have that expectation.
If you have kids, watch it first. There are some characters that look SCARY. Very. If you have older kids, consider doing a 3 way comparison between the original text, the film and the Bible.
Whether you have or havent read the original book, go ahead and give this film a go. Its worth watching- a really enjoyable and edifying way to relax for a couple of hours.

(You have know idea what you started with your golf joke on Heidi's blog)
:)
Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the package of goodies! However did you find out about my sad addiction to cute clothes and chocolate? (;
As soon as the girls are big enough I'll post a pic of them in those beautiful matching dresses. You really are too sweet!
Lyle- I think its only been out for a couple of months (maybe longer in the USA) but its worth checking out.
I hope the golf jokes didnt offend!!
Terah- Oh, glad you got it! It was our pleasure. The matching dress...wasnt sure if you guys would like it, its a slightly unusual colour for babies....but I couldnt resist the matching panties, and I love the natural textures of that brand. I too suffer from the choco/clothes addiction...I think its a common ailment within the maternal communities. Although with the absence of a little, little girl in our family, Im slowly letting go of the clothes component.
Hope your sweet little one is being a good girl and you are both managing to get some rest.
