Ten on Tuesday

I’ve never done a ‘ten on Tuesday’ before. I may not ever again. But Crystals blog inspired me, so here it is.

-I am so close to freedom. Im not talking about an ideological or theological sense…but free from study and books. Just 4000 words and a pleasing grade between me…and ‘it’.

-I’ve been thinking about how weird I am lately. I think Im really weird. Late at night I come up with crazy ideas. Like virtual marketing. Or baking novelty cakes with harmless body cell waste.

-My best friend…well, old best friend, is finally moving back from London. When I moved back from living in Idaho, she moved to London 3 months later. When she visited Australia, we went to Indonesia. Now that she’s moving back Im wondering if this is our cue to move overseas…you know, because I like patterns even if they make no sense.

-Jayde shaved suds (and skin) off her upperlip yesterday in the bath. FYI, I don’t do this, so I don’t know where she got the idea. We just heard the yell and saw the blood. But when I told her she might grow a moustache she started crying and said ‘I’ll never get married now’. I felt like my heart was black. Very black.

- Most of the time I am reconciled to having celiac disease. What I really don’t like is people thinking it’s a ‘diet’ and offering me wheat/oat/rye/barley loaded foods. Its not just about not eating gluten….its an autoimmune disorder. I get sick and fatigued and my bone density is that of a 46 year old woman. Its not worth it!

- Jack and Jayde had hair cuts yesterday. So hot right now.

- When I commented on Terah’s blog today the comment verification box said ‘lober’. I took this as a subliminal message that blogger thinks Im a loser. I mentally retaliated that blogger without the ‘l’ is bogger…slang for toilet. Then I realised I was having an imaginary conflict with a social computing tool and that the social computing tool was right.

- Do all Americans eat with their fork in their right hand and knife in their left hand, or is this just a regional/in-law family thing? I’m not a snob but cross-cultural table manners result in some icy stares at our dinner table.

- I played my first game of netball since 6th grade last week. It was awesome. I love my team and surprised myself. Then I went home and ate chocolate.

- I want to learn how to play the didgeridoo…but Im afraid of failure.

Yeah for the being done with books! That's a lot of words though.

What is digiroo? Netball?

You are hilarious! I am thinking a move to the States could be in order. But your best friend may not like that much.

(wish i could help you out about the knife / fork thing.. i don't pay that much attention?! )

Ok, Ryan just clarified that proper ettiqute is to put the knife down then eat?

Americans are just rude?

What do Aussies do?

You are hilarious!

I think if any of us knew just how weird the others really are...we would not associate with each other.
I once had a dream about a spiney hippo and a talking croc that lived together in a city made of outhouses. Yeah. Where does that stuff come from?

Poor Jayde!

I think having your autoimmune disease would be very difficult. Does your whole family eat like that? Whenever I try to just eat better to lose weight, my family(meaning Jay) gets really frustrated at me for not cooking potatoes, breads, desserts, etc. So then I have to cook those tings for him and I have no such thing as will power so...
I suppose it would be different if I "had" to eat that way. I'll bet it is a great weight loss plan, even if that's not why you do it.

Um, I usually cut up whatever then put the knife down and scarf the food. And I never hold the knife in my left hand, that could be very dangerous as my left hand is very uncoordinated. I don't know what proper etiquette requires though.

Congratulations on being so close to "done"!!! I expect you'll graduate with honors :)

Or baking novelty cakes with harmless body cell waste. Are you pregnant, by any chance?

Yes, yes. It's time for you to move back.

Poor Jayde. I remember trying to shave my upper lip when I was younger. I had noticed the light "moustache" and was afraid it would get thick and bushy. While recovering from the razor burn, I decided I'd rather risk growing the facial hair.

Do all Americans eat with their fork in their right hand and knife in their left hand, or is this just a regional/in-law family thing? Can't vouch for your hubby's mastery of American table etiquette, but it is considered rude to lean (or rest arms against the table, or hold the knife while chewing. Some people would consider it rude to continually hold the fork, as well. It looks to us as though the diner thinks he is starving and is attacking the food, and is more interested in bolting down as much as possible, as quickly as possible.

When your first got here, I noted to Craig that you were using the "continental" eating style. He hadn't even noticed, as he was just happy to be visiting. I was happy, too, but guess it shows that I need to work more on caring about the people themselves rather than whether they are behaving according to "my" idea of normal. (blush)

Which hand holds the fork isn't a huge concern for us, as long as that hand isn't waving a forkful of food around.

I worry more about teaching our kids to not take large bites or chew with open mouths or belch at table (although I understand that in some cultures, this is considered complimentary to the cook?), I do think that if I was eating with someone who I knew to be particularly picky, I would, out of respect for their feelings, do my best to not deliberately goad them with what they considered to be "bad" manners.

Okay, maybe I just feel a little defensive, as poorly-bred "in-laws" was suggested.

Don't know what netball is, but think it's great that you're doing something you enjoy :)

The post-workout chocolate trap--yeah. I have to pretty much keep the stuff out of the house for now--but God's working on me in the area of self-control.
Love you bunches,

Heather

Oh, to more directly answer the table manners question...

Generally, it's hold fork in left hand while cutting, switch back to right for putting food into mouth. Set knife down. Raise fork to lips.

heather is right on the table manners...if most americans are like me, they are too lazy to put the knife down, and will eat the food from their left hand = )

Well I'm left handed, so the manners thing when out the window years ago, It's just normal for me to do everything backwards from most people. (;
(ask Heidi, it weirds her out all the time) =)
You're not weird! You are one of the funniest people I know though! (in a very good way)
I'm so happy for you that you almost have your schooling done!!!
If you guys move back here, you will have a lot of friends ready to greet. =)

Yes. You're weird! Very weird. (;
But Lyle and I were just talking the other day about how much we love you. We'd love for you to move closer, but if you do you have to promise to keep blogging.

Lyle just shovels his food in as fast as he can, clanging his fork on his teeth every time. I once asked him about it and he said it was the result of having so many brothers and trying to get to the leftovers before they could eat it all. (:

Heidi! You've cut out dairy for years for your children! I think that would be almost as hard.
Jude was very sick when he was just over a year old. We took him to a Christian nature-path doctor who said he had a gluten intolerance (among other things) and then proceded to "cure" him of it. He's been fine ever since.

Heidi, you're weird, too!
There's no way I'm that weird!
But, then again, I'm kinda boring.
