Our holiday- Day 1

Thought I better blog about our brief trip last week up to "sunny" Queensland. For those of you not familiar with tourism up that way, the national slogan is 'beautiful one day, perfect the next'.

Ha. It rained basically the entire time we were there. It wasnt cold..oh no. It was HOT, and humid and steamy. :S.

The good news is...is that we didnt let it spoil our wholesome family time together. In fact, the weather was so wet, it was actually hilarious. By the end of each day, we had gone through at least 2 sets of clothes each...for once, I under-packed.

So back to Day 1. Or actually Day -1. We get a call from the airline saying that our flights had been cancelled. Nevermind that we paid 10 whole cents per ticket, we want our flights! They re-routed us through the international terminal. I thought it was Singapore but we ended up getting on a plane to Osaka, Japan. Those of you who know me...know that Japan is a destination I have longed to travel to, have tiptoed around, and am yet to see. Waah. I just wanted to stay on the plane. So aside from having to get up extra early (because we had to check in 3 hrs early instead of 30 mins) it wasnt too bad- international flights get more leg room. We must look extremely suspicious because we get mauled by customs every flight we take. Hmph.

So Day 1. Early start. Very early. *yawn*.

This is Jayde looking relatively bright eyed at the airport. I was so glad we werent getting on 2 back to back 16 hour flights. That was a good feeling for my red, bleary eyes.

The plane ride was uneventful and actually enjoyable. Weird. The car rental company kindly supplied us with an almost brand new car. It had buttons and functions that I didnt even know existed.

This photo was taken outside our room, 2.5 years ago, the last time we were there. We had the same room this time. This is what it looked like then....and what it wouldve looked like on our trip, had the weather been more cooperative. There's a beach off to the left, and beach volleyball courts etc. Not the Hilton, but not too bad.

Within minutes of our arrival, Levi had spotted a jumping spider. A very tiny, pretty one.

And within minutes after that he had flicked it and made it jump so much that the poor thing just internally combusted & died. Poor jumping spider. I felt bad.

We then got in the car and went for a drive up to some glow worm caves. There was a sign saying 'STRICTLY NO PHOTOGRAPHY' and then of course when we got into the caves the guide said, you can take photos in here, just not when we get to the worms. Hmph. Fortunately, I had a little P&S in my bag but it doesnt take a good photo. Anyway- we saw the glow worms. Heaps of them. Its very pretty, but a massive den of death when you consider what they feed on.
Jack was into it.

After the caves we took a bushwalk in the drizzling rain. We saw a lot of bearded dragons which was cool.

We then drove up to the top of Mt Tamborine to check out the view & eat a picnic lunch.

The only salvagable picture of the view...

Then this ant decided to take a nature walk on Jaydes shirt...

Then Jack decided to let it walk through the jungle of his arm hairs...

Then Levi rewarded her by dropping half his lunch on the ground... (look at those mandibles!)

I realised that we were really weird.

Then Jayde cemented this realisation by getting a different species of ant to crawl on her arm.

I saw this little ladybug on the edge of the cliff...

And we enjoyed a treacherous ride down the mountain & back to the resort.

I took the kids swimming in the rain while Jack BBQ'ed dinner.

Levi is not too keen on the water. He thinks there are sharks everywhere...even in swimming pools. *sigh*. But once he gets in, he doesnt want to get out.

Jayde loves the water but gets chronic ear pain & issues afterwards. *sigh*.
I dont know why or how she's smiling under the water. *shakes head*

And so that was day 1.

Aside from the massive domestic fight that went on in the room next door for 2 hours. They got kicked out at 11pm at night. Yup. That was...that. And I never ever ever ever will let a day go by when Im not thankful for having the kindest, most patient, loving, caring husband in the world!

How Fun!
Okay, I am now thankful for winters!! So bugs get killed each winter so we don't have things such as those jumping spiders!! I can tell you guys are very much used to "bugs" (;
Glad you guys had fun!

:)
Crystal- we used a 'cheap' fuji that is waterproof up to a couple of metres. I think it was about $150- we got it as a p&s for Jayde but have been pretty disappointed with the image quality outside the water. A friend of ours has a panasonic lumix which takes VERY good normal shots, and is also waterproof. I wish we'd got that instead but its obviously a lot more expensive.

Terah- green suits you :P. Will get to the rest soon :)

Shelby- Thank you for your message! I had to go back and find it. Very happy you guys found a place and alls well with the C&S Beck household :). Regarding bugs...there really is a massive difference between here and there. The other thing is birds...I think Australia has way more birds..its crazy.

Heather- I miss you. Can you write me one of your long cuddly emails? *sniff*. lol- youre asking me a nature question with Tyson in the house??? Glow worms eat other insects- they lay out these little sticky drops of silk that hang down over their crevice like a beaded curtain. When an insect flies or comes crawling towards the light (of the glow worms tail), they get tangled & eaten. The cave where we were had to make sure they released thousands of insects each day into the caves. *shudder*.

More soon...:)
